The first batch of steam locomotives collected at the Takao Railway Museum were CT259 and DT609, representative Taiwan steam locomotives from the period of Japanese rule. In 1935, type CT250 (Japanese Railway C55) was the newest steam locomotive model. Ahead of the Taiwan Exposition of 1935, it completed its maiden voyage synchronously in Japan and Taiwan. This locomotive was specifically used for express trains. Type DT580 (Japanese Railway 9600) was a top locomotive in the Taisho period (1920s) that was used specifically for freight trains. After the complete electrification of the Taiwan Railway Trunk Line in 1979, all the steam locomotives were retired.
